✨ Estonian Knitting with Aleks Byrd – August 2026 ✨
We are excited to announce that knitwear designer and illustrator Aleks Byrd will be visiting in August 2026 to share her deep knowledge of Estonian traditional knitting.
Estonian traditional knitting is a centuries-old craft passed down through generations and deeply woven into the country’s cultural identity. With a long history of wool production and textile artistry, Estonia developed a distinctive knitting tradition celebrated for its intricate lacework, geometric motifs, and rich use of colour.
The origins of Estonian knitting can be traced back to the 13th century, when the Livonian Crusaders introduced sheep farming to the region. As wool production expanded, knitting became both a practical necessity and a creative form of expression. Garments and accessories were handmade not only for warmth and durability, but also as symbols of regional identity, craftsmanship, and artistry.
Among the most renowned traditions is the famous Haapsalu shawl, originating from the coastal town of Haapsalu in the 19th century. These delicate lace shawls are admired for their fine construction and intricate patterns, and remain highly regarded by knitters around the world today. Other notable regional traditions include the colourful mittens of Kihnu, the elegant shawls of Saaremaa, and the richly patterned textiles of the Setu people.
Colour also plays an important role in traditional Estonian design. Knitters often combine bold shades such as red, blue, and green in striking geometric arrangements inspired by nature, folklore, and regional costume traditions. The balance of intricate patterning and vivid colourwork gives Estonian knitting its instantly recognisable aesthetic.
Today, Estonian knitting continues to inspire knitters worldwide, blending centuries-old techniques with contemporary design. Among the modern designers helping preserve and reinterpret these traditions is Aleks Byrd. Drawing inspiration from her heritage connected to the USA, Estonia, and Canada, Aleks Byrd is particularly passionate about exploring her Estonian roots through knitwear design.
