Have you ever looked at your stash and wondered, “Do these colours actually go together?” This 3-hour workshop with Mat will help you understand why colours work together — or why they don’t — and give you practical tools to create harmonious colour combinations for your next project.
You’ll learn how to take yarns you already have in your stash and turn them into beautiful, considered colour palettes. You’ll also discover techniques for troubleshooting tricky colour combinations and working confidently with projects that use lots of different colours.
This workshop is a great opportunity to rediscover those yarns hiding in your stash that you’ve struggled to find the perfect project for!
Meet Mat
Mat brings decades of experience working with colour across IT and film, web development, graphic design, oil painting and fibre arts.
He’ll share his knowledge in a practical and hands-on way, helping you develop an understanding of colour that you can take into all your future fibre projects.
What You’ll Learn
During the workshop, you’ll:
- Learn the basics of colour theory, including key terms and concepts

Discover how to use a colour wheel as a tool for guiding your colour choices
- Complete colour-matching exercises to test and reinforce your understanding
- Learn yarn-management techniques to create colour harmony from otherwise incompatible colours
- Create your own harmonious colour palette using yarns you bring from your stash and colour swatches provided in the workshop

What to Bring
Bring along a selection of yarn from your stash — any ply is welcome!
Aim to bring 8–10 different colours if you can. Don’t worry if you don’t have that many; bring whatever you have available.
Mat will also bring a selection of assorted scrap yarns to make sure there are plenty of colour options to work with.
Tip: The more colours you bring, the more opportunities you’ll have to experiment!
