Join Jim from Bellevue Yarns for a hands-on yarn dyeing workshop where we'll explore the differences between dyeing a white base yarn and a black base yarn, and discover how the starting colour of your fibre can transform the final result.
This practical workshop will take you through the yarn dyeing process from start to finish. You'll learn about preparing your yarn, choosing and mixing colours, creating your dye baths and applying colour to different yarn bases.
We'll begin with an introduction to yarn dyeing and the basics of safe dyeing practices before diving into the fun part — playing with colour!

- Appropriate PPE and safe dyeing practices
- The equipment used for yarn dyeing
- How to choose and combine colours
- How to accurately weigh and mix your dyes
- How to keep dyeing records so you can recreate your favourite colourways
- How to prepare a dye bath for your yarn
- Techniques for achieving good and even dye coverage

- How to rinse your yarn once the dyeing process is complete
- How to dry your yarn at home
- How to prepare and handle your yarn once it has dried
You'll first watch a demonstration using both a white and black yarn base, allowing you to see firsthand how the same colours can produce very different results.
Then it's your turn! You'll choose your colours, mix your own dyes and place your hanks into the dye baths. You'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get guidance throughout the process.
Depending on time, we'll also explore other dyeing techniques and discuss how different methods can affect the finished colour and appearance of your yarn.
We'll finish the workshop by sharing our results, discussing what we learnt and answering any questions you may have.

No previous yarn dyeing experience is required. Whether you're completely new to dyeing or have experimented with yarn before, this workshop is a great opportunity to explore colour and understand how your choice of base yarn can change the final result.
You will be provided 4 x 100gm skeins of fibre to dye
